Tohra calls for a 'conscience vote' at SGPC meet

E-Mail this report to a friend

In a desperate bid to save himself from being ousted from his post by pro-Badal SGPC members, Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee chief Gurcharan Singh tohra has appealed to all SGPC members to '' vote according to their conscience'' at the SGPC general house meeting on March 22.

In a letter addressed recently to all the 185 SGPC and nominated members, the beleaguered SGPC chief said they should vote according to their conscience and reject the no-confidence motion against him, expected to be tabled by the pro-Badal lobby.

This, the letter said, should be done to honour the December 31 Akal Takht hukamnama (edict) which directed maintenance of status quo till April 15 in view of the Khalsa tricentenary celebrations. ''The hukamnama is still applicable to all concerned,'' Tohra said.

The SGPC chief, in his letter, categorically stated that he would quit office on April 15 and that he was ready to hand over his resignation letter dated April 15 to the members in advance.

He said the demand for summoning a general house meeting to remove him was violative of the hukamnama.
