Sharief arrives in China

E-Mail this report to a friend

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief arrived in Beijing today for a four-day visit.

He is due to start talks on the Kargil conflict in the afternoon with his Chinese counterpart Zhu Rongji and is expected to brief Chinese leaders on the situation. He is due to meet President Jiang Zemin and People's Congress leader Li Peng tomorrow.

Pakistan is seeking China's help in its efforts to secure more international backing on the Kargil issue.

China has traditionally maintained friendly relations with Pakistan but has been substantially neutral on the issue of Kashmir.

Sharief is on his third visit to China but the first since both Pakistan and India carried out nuclear tests in May 1998. He is also due to visit the southern city of Kunming and Hong Kong.
