Pak rules out 'major conflict'

Islamabad feels that the Kargil infiltration would not escalate into a 'greater military conflict' between India and Pakistan. However, Pakistan has been ''keeping a vigilant eye to protect every inch of the homeland''.

According to the Dawn, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief had given this assurance to President Rafiq Tarar while briefing him about the situation at the Line of Control.

Sharief also briefed Tarar yesterday about US President Bill Clinton's call to him, urging that Pakistan should pull out its forces from Kargil.

Tarar had reportedly asked Sharief to tackle the Indian propaganda that Pakistan was backing Kashmiri 'freedom fighters'.

The newspaper said that Pakistan might send diplomatic missions to important countries like the US and Russia to present Pakistan's position on Kargil.

Reports indicate that Islamabad is trying to convince world leaders that it has no control over the 'freedom fighters in Kargil', and was in no position to ask them to withdraw from the Indian side of the LoC.

Reflecting the mood of the establishment, an Islamic militant group has rejected Clinton's plea that Pakistani forces must withdraw from the Kargil sector. They plan to continue their jihad .
