Field Marshal Cariappa's birth centenary celebrated

E-Mail this report to a friend

A number of Kannadigas in the national capital paid tributes to Field Marshal K M Cariappa on his birth centenary today.

The role of the late field marshal in wresting the areas occupied by Pakistani infiltrators after the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India was remembered at a meeting organised by Dehali Kannadiga, a Kannada monthly.

The Indian Army headed by General Cariappa had flushed out the Pakistani Army regulars who had infiltrated in force under the guise of a 'tribal invasion'.

The meeting also remembered the role played by another Kannadiga, General Thimmaiah, in freeing Jammu and Kashmir.

M B Samaga, editor of the monthly, urged the government to confer Bharat Ratna posthumously on Field Marshal Cariappa.

He added that his publication would institute an award in the memory of Cariappa for Kannadiga martyrs in the current Kargil conflict.
