Indian Army intensifies campaign in Batalik

Indian troops backed by artillery units intensified their attacks on the Pakistani intruders in the Batalik sub-sector today.

A spokesman said Indian troops, after recapturing Tiger Hill yesterday, launched a massive assault on the intruders to dislodge them from four heights in the Batalik sub-sector.

Though they were able to snap the supply lines of the intruders at some places, it may take a day or two to totally encircle them.

The spokesman said artillery shelling continued through the night and today in Kargil and Batalik sub-sectors.

Sources said five Pakistani intruders, reportedly soldiers, were killed or wounded in the Batalik sub-sector after Indian artillery scored a direct hit on one of their bunkers.

Pakistani troops resorted to heavy shelling in Kargil last evening, targeting civilian installations.

Some of the shells fell in the vicinity of the Kargil station of Doordarshan, causing minor damage to some equipment. But it was not clear if the National Network programme on Kargil Doordarshan was off last evening because of the damage caused by the shelling or for some other reason.

The sources said some of the shells also fell near the Kargil radio station building without causing any damage. But four houses nearby were damaged.
