Govt to take over gangster Mirchi's properties

E-Mail this report to a friend

A metropolitan court in Bombay has ordered that the properties of gangster Iqbal Mirchi be attached.

Esplanade Chief Metropolitan Magistrate T V Nalawade issued the order on Thursday. Mirchi, a proclaimed offender, will thus be forced to forgo his assets, including Hotel Meenas (earlier Hotel Skyway) in Santa Cruz, three buildings -- Rabina Mansion, Mariam Lodge and Sea View -- in Worli, and two flats at Juhu.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (narcotics) Dilip Shrirao pursued the attachment proceedings. The properties are to be attached through the collector.

The court made it clear that under section 83 of the Criminal Procedure Code no application on Mirchi's behalf can be entertained unless he surrenders.

The Maharashtra government in 1994 had ordered the arrest of Mirchi under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. However, he had absconded.

Subsequently, in January 1995, then Esplanade chief metropolitan magistrate declared him a proclaimed offender under the Act and for his alleged involvement in the murder of one Amar Suvarna.
