E-Mail this report to a friend

The Bombay police today announced full protection for India captain Mohammed Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Board of Control for Cricket in India president Raj Singh Dungarpur and chairman of the selection committee Ajit Wadekar in the light of the attack on the BCCI office on Monday afternoon.

The BCCI is also planning to change the Indian team's time and place of arrival from New Zealand. The team was scheduled to land in Bombay on Thursday after the last one-day international at Christchurch, to be held tomorrow.

The police said they would fortify Raj Singh's residence in south Bombay, and the homes of Azharuddin and Tendulkar in the western suburbs. All three are to be provided with an armed police escort.

Tendulkar is the only Bombay player likely to be in the Indian team for the Test matches against Pakistan. But the security information will be passed to other states where Test probables stay.

Wadekar stays in Sportsfield building in Worli, where former cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Bapu Nadkarni, Polly Umrigar and Gulab Ramchand also live. Another resident of the building is BCCI executive secretary Sharad Diwadkar, who was manhandled by the hooligans. Diwadkar's right forefinger was reportedly injured in the attack.
