Pawar, 9 other ex-MPs in NCP's first list

Nationalist Congress Party president and former Union defence minister Sharad Pawar will contest his home constituency, Baramati in western Maharashtra, in the ensuing Lok Sabha election.

Pawar's names figures in the first list of 24 candidates which was released in Bombay today by state NCP president Chhagan Bhujbal.

Along with the list of 24 Lok Sabha candidates, the first list of 122 candidates for the state assembly election was also announced.

The second list is expected in the next few days.

Of the remaining 24 Lok Sabha constituencies, seats will be left for allies, including the Samajwadi Party, Janata Dal, Peasants' and Workers' Party, Republican Party of India (Athawale) and the Swatantra Bharat Party led by Shetkari Sangathana leader Sharad Joshi.

In the 1998 general election, Pawar, who was then with the Indian National Congress, polled 529,059 votes of the total 803,858 cast.

In the 1996 Lok Sabha election also he won by a huge margin, getting 427,581 out of the total 747,148 votes cast.

Earlier, in the 1984 Lok Sabha election, when the late Rajiv Gandhi wrested power with a thumping majority, Pawar, who was then leading the Congress-S in the Opposition, won by a huge margin.

Apart from Pawar, eight other members of the dissolved Lok Sabha have been renominated by the NCP. They are: Shankar Nam (Dahanu), Datta Meghe (Wardha), Suryakanta Patil (Hingoli), Suresh Warpurkar (Parbhani), Ashok Mohol (Khed), Vitthal Tupe (Pune), Madan Patil (Sangli) and Sadashiv Mandlik (Kolhapur).

The other NCP Lok Sabha candidates are: Sunit Jhiman (Ratnagiri), Ramesh Dube (Bombay North-West), Prabhakar Hegde (Thane), Madhav Balwant Patil (Nasik), Dhanaji Sitaram Ahire (Dhule), Vasant More (Erandol), Sahebrao Ashriji Sardar (Buldhana), Rajabhau Thakre (Yavatmal), Vijay Borade (Jalna), Mukesh Abdul Purkar (Solapur), Dada Patil Shelke (Ahmednagar), Gulab Shelke (Kopargaon), Laxman Patil (Satara), Shrinivas Patil (Karad) and former Shiv Sena legislator Nivedita Mane (Ichalkaranji).

The party candidates for the assembly election are as follows:

Greater Bombay district: Ashok Datrak (Colaba), Raju Merchant (Opera House), Subhash Mayekar (Malabar Hill), Sunita Shinde (Mazagon), Vishnu Kanavaje (Parel), Sachin Aher (Sewree), Vijay Kurtadakar (Worli), Ramesh Parab (Dadar), Vijay Kamble (Kherwadi) and Sanjay Patil (Bhandup).

Singhudurg district: Pravin Bhosale (Sawantwadi) and Sandesh Parkar (Malwan).

Ratnagiri district: Arvind Shirsekar (Rajapur), Suhas Kumar Shetye (Ratnagiri), Rajan Desai (Sangameshwar), Ramesh Kadam (Chiplun) and Keshav Bhosale (Khed).

Raigad district: Manik Jagtap (Mahad) and Sunil Tatkare (Mangaon).

Thane district: Ashok Raul (Thane), Shantaram Patil (Wada), Krishna Ghoda (Dahanu), Govind Hemchandra Ramchandra (Jawahar) and Mahadu N Varora (Shahapur).

Nasik district: Shivram Jhole (Igatpuri), Vasant Pawar (Nasik), Tukaram Dighole (Sinnar), Prashant Hirey (Dabhade), Shirish Kumar Kotwal (Chandwad), Ramdas Charoskar (Dindori), Harishchandra Chavan (Surgana) and A T Pawar (Kalwan).

Dhule district: Mahadu Gotu Gaikwad (Sakri), Dilip Naik (Navapur), Vijay Kumar Gavit (Nandurbar), Rupsingh Paradke (Akrani) and Gajanan Narayan Patil (Kusumba).

Jalgaon district: Satish Patil (Parola), Arun Gujarathi (Chopada), Ishwar Jain (Jamner) and Shirish Choudhary (Raver).

Buldhana district: S S More (Malkapur), Rajendra Gode (Buldhana), Baban Chaudhary (Chikhli), Rajendra Shingane (Sindkhed Raja) and Bhaskar Kale (Mehkar).

Akola district: Subhash Thakre (Mangrulpir) and Prakash Dahake (Karanja).

Amrawati district: Lalita Patel (Melghat), Harshawardhan Deshmukh (Morshi) and Sharad Tasre (Tiwsa).

Wardha district: Shridhar Thakre (Arvi) and Ramdas Tadas (Pulgaon).

Yavatmal district: Prakash Devsarkar (Umerkhed).

Nanded district: Pradeep Hemusingh Naik (Kinwat), Baburao Pawar (Hadgaon), Madhav Kinhalkar (Bhokar).

Parbhani district: Vijay Gahane (Parbhani), Jayprakash Dandegaonkar (Basmat), Rajni Satav (Kalamnuri), Rajesh Goregaonkar (Hingoli), Ramprasad Bordikar (Jintur) and Abdullakhan Latifkhan Durshani Babajani (Pathri).

Jalna district: Vaijanath Akat (Partur), Rajesh Tope (Ambad), Rajesh Raut Patil (Jalna) and Pandit Dhanure (Badnapur).

Aurangabad district: Prabhakar Palodkar (Sillod), Kailash Patil (Vaijapur) and Sanjay Waghchaore (Paithan).

Beed district: Amarsingh Pandit (Gavrai), Baji Jagtap (Majalgaon), Saheb Darekar (Ashti) and Vimal Mundada (Khej).

Latur district: Bal Jadhav (Udgir) and Kisan Jadhav (Ausa).

Osmanabad district: Padamsinh Patil (Osmanabad).

Solapur district: Mohammad Gulabsau Tinwala (Akkalkot), Dharmanna Sadul (Solapur City North), Laxman Dhoble (Mangalweda), Rajan Patil (Mohol), Dilip Sopal (Barshi), Baban Shinde (Mada), Sudharak Paricharak (Pandharpur), Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil (Malshiras) and Narayan Patil (Karmala).

Ahmednagar district: Baban Pachpute (Shrigonda), Dada Kalamkar (Ahmednagar South), Shankar Patil (Ahmednagar North), Baban Dhakne (Pathardi), Pandurang Abhang (Shevgaon), Bhanudas Murkute (Shrirampur), Raosaheb Mhaske (Shirdi), Shankar Kolhe (Kopargaon), Prasad Tanpure (Rahuri), Vasant Jhabre (Parner), Dilip Shinde (Sangamner) and Madhukar Pichad (Nagar Akola).
