Six killed, seven abducted in Tripura

At least four tribal guerrillas and two policemen, including a sub-inspector, were killed in separate incidents, while the militants kidnapped seven people in Tripura in the past 24 hours.

The police said the militants ambushed an escort party of additional district magistrate of West Tripura at Garopara under Takarjala police station, killing one constable on the spot; the sub-inspector leading the escort party succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. Two of those seriously injured were admitted to the G B hospital in Agartala.

The ultras fled when other security forces retaliated. Combing operation was on to nab the militants.

The Tripura State Rifles and Central Reserve Police Force personnel shot dead four tribal militants at Takhiraipara under Teliamura police station in West Tripura last night, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, the personnel jointly launched a combing operation to nab the militants and in the ensuing encounter, four ultras were killed on the spot. Two guns were also recovered.

In another incident yesterday, a tribal group abducted seven passengers after waylaying a jeep at Warengbari in south Tripura. Security forces have been rushed to the area.

Tribal guerrillas had so far killed at least 37 people, including security personnel and senior Communist Party of India-Marxist leaders, and kidnapped more than 34 during this month.

All the opposition parties, including the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party, criticised the left front government for spurt in militant activities in the state and demanded promulgation of President's rule in the state.
