Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today called on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at New Delhi and sought his personal intervention for the speedy clearance of various pending projects for the state including extension of the jurisdiction of the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited to Madras and inclusion of the city in the list of five cities where new international airports are to be built.

The chief minister pointed out to Vajpayee that the waiting period for telephone connections was more than three years in Madras city. The existing international airport in the city was extremely congested as it was handling more than 1.1 million passengers every year, according to an official press release.

Karunanidhi sought early clearance for the Sethusamudram project for which environmental study was nearing completion and allotment of a berth for the proposed liquefied natural gas terminal at the Ennore port, near Madras.
