E-Mail this report to a friend

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani today said a commission to study the question of introducing presidential form of government in the country would be set up soon after the coming assembly elections in four states.

In an interview to a private television channel, Advani said the proposed commission would consist of distinguished men from public life, legal and constitutional experts and other outstanding people who can command the confidence of the whole nation. He, however, said that it should be seen that essential features of the Constitution remain the same because there is nothing wrong with them.

The home minister, however, made it clear that he did not advocate a presidential system and said both the systems have pluses and minuses.

He said more emphasis has to laid on accountability than stability in the present context.
