The Congress will stage a dharna (sit-in strike) at Ranchi, south Bihar, on Thursday, October 29, to press for the early creation of Jharkhand state.

Jharkhand Regional Congress spokesman Anadi Braham said the sit-in before the divisional commissioner's office is likely to be led by former Lok Sabha speaker Purno A Sangma, MP.

Jharkhand Mahila (women's) Congress president Pratibha Pandey said party workers would form a human chain at all block headquarters in the region on November 13 and at the 18 district headquarters on November 14, to mobilise women in support of the movement for a separate state.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (Soren) has also decided to stage a dharna before the commissioner's office in Ranchi to ensure the success of its proposed agitation, including the Jharkhand mukti (liberation) rally on November 29 and the march to Delhi from November 30, to press for passage of the Bihar State Reorganisation Bill, 1998, in the winter session of Parliament.

The Jharkhand People's Party has also announced a dharna in Ranchi on Thursday, October 29, to be followed by similar programmes at all 18 district headquarters in south Bihar from November 1 to 14.

JPP central presidium member Kamal Kishore Bhagat said the party would enforce an economic blockade in the region if the Centre fails to get the bill passed.

In another significant development, the Rashtriya Janata Dal's Ranchi district general secretary quit the party in protest against its anti-Jharkhand stance. The RJD is the ruling party in Bihar and its president, Laloo Prasad Yadav, has staunchly opposed the creation of Jharkhand.
