60 devotees drown in Guwahati

Sixty devotees drowned in a boat capsize on river Brahmaputra near Guwahati's Sukreshar temple early Tuesday morning.

The tragedy occurred when two boats collided midstream. Two people swam to shore.

Operations to retrieve the bodies are on. Kamrup district Deputy Superintendent of Police D N Saikia said army divers have been pressed into service.

A large number of devotees had been travelling by boats since morning, after the Chhat puja (worship), he said.
