Bandh turns violent in Srinagar

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Jammu and Kashmir police burst teargas shells and caned to disperse slogan-shouting demonstrators as the bandh called by the All Party Kashmir Hurriyat Conference crippled life in the valley.

About 30 people, including APKHC and Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party leaders, were arrested at Lal Chowk in Srinagar. They were protesting against the 'continued presence of Indian security forces in the state.'

Shops, business establishments, government offices, schools, colleges, banks and post offices in Srinagar and other major towns remained closed.

An APKHC spokesman said party chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani and two senior leaders were under house arrest since Monday evening.
