E-Mail this report to a friend

Eleven militants surrendered before Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Gurbachan Jagat on Monday.

The militants, all belonging to Doda district and between 17 and 23, were given Rs 5,000 each at a function organised by the police in Jammu.

They would be provided Rs 2,000 more for rehabilitation, and absorbed into the paramilitary forces, two battalions of which have already been created for this purpose, the director general said.

He said the overall situation in controlling militancy has improved in Doda. Though foreign mercenaries were still hiding in the upper reaches and carrying out activities, local militants have been almost eliminated, he claimed.

Nine militants were killed and 11 others arrested in the last three months in Doda.

Arms and ammunition recovered from militants were exhibited at the function.
