Government hopes talks with NSCN in New York will prolong ceasefire

Almost a week after Prime Minister A B Vajpayee had a meeting with Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland leaders in New York, the government has expressed the hope that the 14-month old cease-fire with the terrorist groups would lead to substantive political talks to end the age-old Naga problem.

Home ministry sources said the prime minister met NSCN leaders during his New York tour last month in which various aspects of peace negotiations were discussed.

It has been agreed during the meeting to carry forward the peace process by holding discussions on substantive issues and to explore ways and means to arrive at a mutually acceptable political solution, the sources said.

NSCN (I-M) president Isak Chisi Swu and general secretary Thingaleng Muivah had a brief meeting with the prime minister during the latter's nine-day visit to the United States. The meeting with Vajpayee was kept a secret by the government.
