"Economic blockade" on Manipur lifted

The week-long "economic blockade on Manipur", called by three tribal bodies of Nagaland to protest against an incident of firing, was today temporarily suspended following assurances by the Manipur government.

In a statement, Joint Action Committee convenor Sovenyi and members Vipose and P Inaho Sumi said the three organisations -- the Angami Public Organisation, the Chakhesang Public Organisation and the Sumi Hoho -- decided to call off the blockade following assurances and a request by the Nagaland government that they consider the interest of the people of Manipur.

The three apex organisations have decided to suspend the economic blockade with immediate effect till November 30.

The Nagaland government had assured to take up with the Manipur government the matter of the August 9 incident that claimed five lives and injured former Nagaland speaker Thenucho.

According to the JAC members, the Manipur government had agreed to replace Thenucho's car and meet all his medical expenses.
