MP deputy CM relents and quits

Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pyarelal Kanwar today submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Digvijay Singh.

This put an end to the controversy over Kanwar's refusal to step down. He had earlier faxed a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi seeking her intervention to prevent his dismissal, stating it would shatter the confidence of the tribals, whom he represented, in the Congress.

Kanwar met Digvijay Singh for half-an-hour at the CM's home this morning. Later, he said he had tendered his resignation, keeping in view the party's interests and recognising the chief minister's prerogative in the matter.

He said all misunderstandings had been cleared since the chief minister had maintained that he (Kanwar) was innocent in the Madhotal land deal case.
