EU threatens India, Pak with sanctions

European Union leaders hinted today that they could impose sanctions on India and Pakistan unless the two countries back away from their nuclear rivalry.

"The European Union will consider further measures should India and Pakistan fail to make progress'' toward defusing the tension caused by their tit-for-tat nuclear test blasts, said a draft statement from the two-day EU summit at Cardiff in Wales.

"India and Pakistan should take early steps to reduce tension and stability in South Asia by resuming their political dialogue with each other and with China,'' the draft said.

It called on both nations to sign up to international non-proliferation regimes and to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.
