EC gets court notices over poll survey curbs

The Rajasthan high court has issued show-cause notices to the Election Commission on a petition filed against the panel's directives on the publication or broadcast of exit poll surveys.

The EC had banned the publication and broadcast of results of pre-poll surveys between February 14 and February 28.

A division bench of the high court comprising Justices V S Kokje and B A Chachan today issued the notices after the preliminary hearing on the petition filed by a local resident, Surendra Tiwari. The notices are returnable by February 7.

The petitioner pleaded that the Commission had no powers or jurisdiction to issue such directives or impose such restrictions.
