Gokhale, Gruner bag Gandhi award

Dr Sharat Chandra Gokhale and Mathilde Gruner have won the Gandhi award, conferred by the Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation for outstanding work in leprosy eradication.

Dr Gokhale -- chairman of the Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation and the International Leprosy Foundation -- has been working in the field for the last 40 years.

Gruner, who belongs to Munich, has been working towards leprosy eradication for the last 25 years. She was the first to moot the constitution of the International Leprosy Organisation during the Rehabilitation Congress in Bombay. Later, she was elected vice-chairperson of the organisation.

The award comprises Rs 200,000, a memento and a certificate of honour, and would be handed over on February 21.

Dr Gokhale started work as superintendent of the Leprosy Home in Bombay. He specialised in treating leprosy among small children when he was chairman of the Community Aid and Sponsorship Programme. His books on the subject -- in Marathi and English -- have been received well throughout the world.
