Surjeet to mediate between JD, SP

The United Front has asked Communist Party of India-M general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet to mediate between the Janata Dal and the Samajwadi Party over seat-sharing in Uttar Pradesh. Surjeet has also been handed over a list of Janata Dal nominees for the general election.

JD spokesman Mohan Prakash said party president Sharad Yadav had given the names of the constituencies in UP where the party feels it has better poll prospects. He, however, chose not to disclose the list at this juncture.

The JD Parliamentary Board has already decided to stake its claim to all the 16 seats where the party fielded candidates in the 1996 election.

But SP sources said party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav was not ready to concede the JD demand in view of its 'dismal performance' in the last election -- it won only two seats. The state has 85 seats.

The JDPB will meet on Saturday and Sunday to finalise the candidates's list for all states. The SP is slated to do this in a day or two.
