One of the few constituencies that has never voted the BJP, the fight always being between the Congress and the JD variations. Harpal won the seat in 1989 and 1991 for the JD, and in the 1996 election Munawwar Husain of the SP was elected, defeating his BJP rival Udaiveer Singh by 10,000 votes, the second time that Singh has been runner-up. The Congress, which last won the seat in 1984, came third, with Yogesh winning 114,389 votes. Incidentally, Gayatri Devi -- Chaudhary Charan Singh's wife -- won this seat for the Janata Party in 1980.
