Kanshi Ram won the seat for the BSP in 1991, but in 1996 his candidate Anil Yadav came third. The winner was Ram Singh Shakya of the SP, who had earlier won the seat in 1989 and 1980 for the JD. This time round, Shakya defeated Sukhda Mishra of the BJP by 9,000 votes.
