After voting Congress in 1952, this seat elected an Independent, S M Banerjee, for four consecutive terms. Arif Mohamed Khan was the Congress MP from here in 1980, and in 1984, the Congress's Naresh Chandra Chaturvedi defeated the Janata Party's Syed Shahabuddin. In 1989, for the first time, the constituency went to the CPI-M, and elected Subhasini Muzaffar Ali, daughter of the INA heroine Colonel Lakshmi Sehgal. It did a roundabout in 1991, and elected the BJP's Jagatveer Singh Dron who retained the seat in 1996, defeating Ali by 151,000 votes.
