The Congress won just twice from here, in 1957 and 1962, after which it was a tussle between the DMK and the AIADMK. From 1984 the latter had won the election till 1991, and in 1996 the tables were turned. The DMK's K P Ramalingam defeated the AIADMK's A V Kumaraswamy by 193,000 votes.
