Sukhbir Singh Badal (SAD) wrested the seat back from the Congress in 1996 by just 38,000 votes. In 1991 the Congress's Jagmit Singh won the seat by a convincing margin, securing 58.6 % of the vote, as against the BSP's 27.2 %.
