Darbara Singh -- later Congress chief minister -- won in 1971, before being stopped by the BLD in 1977. In 1980, the man who was elected from here later moved on to Rashtrapati Bhavan where he had a run-in with Rajiv Gandhi: Giani Zail Singh. From 1985 to 1991, Kamal Chaudhary (Congress) was elected from here, defeating the BSP's Mayawati in the last mentioned election. The BSP took revenge in 1996, when BSP supremo Kanshi Ram contested and defeated Chaudhary by 11,000 votes. Chaudhary is now the BJP candidate and Kanshi Ram has turned tail, and moved to Saharanpur in UP.
