G C Munda won this seat for the JD in 1989 and 1991, but when the party nominated P B Nayak in 1996 the party ended up in the third position. Barely one thousand votes ahead, in the second position, was the BJP's Harihar Soren, right behind the Congress's Madhaba Sardar.
