It has always been a contest between the Congress and the Peasants and Workers Party, with the voters not repeating any one till 1984. That was also the year Abdul Rahman Antulay, former Congress chief minister who then broke away from the Congress, contested as an Independent and lost. By 1989, he had made his peace with the parent party, was nominated on its ticket and has held onto the seat for three consecutive terms which, given the constituency's background, is an achievement in itself.
