The constituency began by voting the Jana Sangh in its first election in 1957, before going the Congress way. It also voted the Janata twice, in 1977 and 1980. Husain Dalwai was elected from here in 1984 on the Congress ticket, and in 1989 and 1991 the constituency returned to the Congress fold. In 1991, in fact, the second position had been taken over by the Shiv Sena's Anant Geete, who in 1996 overhauled the Congress candidate by almost 130,000 votes.
