Mahendra Baitha won the 1989 and 1991 elections from here on a Janata Dal ticket, joined George Fernandes's Samata Party on whose ticket he retained this seat in 1996. The Congress, which came second in 1989, was nowhere to be seen in the next election, with the BJP moving in. In 1996, of course, with the two joining hands, there was no stopping Baitha.
