Police defuse 'tiffin box bomb' in Madras

The police averted a major mishap with the timely detection of a powerful 'tiffin box bomb' on the arterial Anna Road in Madras this morning, barely three hours before Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was to pass that way.

The four kg bomb packed in an aluminium tiffin carrier with a time device, was set to go off at 0855 hours. Around the same time, Karunanidhi passed that way to take part in an official function. A police constable on patrol duty came across an abandoned bag containing the bomb behind a bus stop at 0630 hours and thus averted a mishap.

Senior police officials and bomb experts who rushed to the spot recovered the bomb and defused it at a nearby stadium.

The Special Security Guard personnel were also involved in defusing the bomb, the police said. Besides the bomb, the police also recovered a plastic box containing battery cells and a quartz clock from the bag.

Had the bomb exploded, its impact would have been felt in a radius of 300 feet and considering the peak hour, the devastation would have been severe, the police added.
