E-Mail this report to a friend

The United Christian Forum for Human Rights has urged Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to intervene and protect the life and property of the small Christian community in Gujarat, which witnessed violent incidents on the occasion of Christmas.

In a letter, the forum expressed deep anguish over the incidents of violence which broke out in several places in Dangs district on Christmas day and sought the prime minister's intervention in bringing the guilty to book.

At least two Christian schools were destroyed and three Christians injured in the incidents and the guilty organisations had been identified by the victims, it claimed and urged Vajpayee to order immediate inquiries into the incidents and ask the state government to take action against the attackers.

The letter, signed by the forum's convenor John Dayal and Karam Masih, bishop of Delhi, Church of North India hoped necessary action would be taken to reassure the Christian community which was deeply distressed by the continuing violence in Gujarat.
