Date sent: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 21:01:49 EDT The article on Sachin was both awesome and groovy!
Date sent: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 17:07:45 EDT The article on Tendlya was really nice, and brought back some of the sweet amchi Mumbai memories. Thanks to Prem Panicker too! I now don't seem to miss much of Indian cricket nowadays.

Date sent: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 11:51:25 -0700 (MST) One of the most unimaginative and poorly written articles. Think the "Jigar.." part went too far. Varsha Bhosle should stick to vulgarities, calling names and generally spewing venom on our society.
Date sent: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 14:20:00 -0500 Great article, Varsha! Very well thought out, very compelling, and with lovely philosophy to boot. Sanjay Sridharan

Date sent: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 09:28:33 -0700 I am a frequent reader of Rediff columns. I found your column "Batman very irrelevant to the title and also very boring. Throughout the column, I was trying to find out what were trying to say!! Gurminder Singh
Date sent: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 22:38:53 +0530 The greatness of Sachin is -- he is a great entertainer. In that sense he has elevated the idea of cricket enjoyment to millions of his fans. Vaidyanathan
Date sent: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 16:06:31 EDT Not a very good write up on Sachin.
Date sent: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 20:14:04 -0400 Am an avid reader of Varsha's stuff. Expected more from her. Unfortunately the article had very little content. It was more about Varsha. Very little about Tendulkar, let alone his cricket. Ashish
Date sent: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 22:01:19 -0500 Treating all 19 languages in the Eighth Schedule is a first step to reviving our country's cultural identity. I still feel sorry not being able to learn my mother tongue because we were given the impression that English is important and without it we would not be fit to lead a decent life. After visiting Europe, the US and the Middle East, I realised that we should have given more importance to our own language and have been more confident of ourselves like the Germans or the French etc., who speak their own language. By giving lesser importance to our own language, I felt I have lost even the opportunity to understand several natural and traditional healing secrets that have been practised by many old men and women whom I met. English has only helped me to be comfortable and I have only earned a few dollars more than my brothers and sisters. I have learned today that I am educated to only be comfortably unhappy in life when my life's aim should have been to be happily uncomfortable. But who can understand the difference between happiness and comfort when in the modern days we have treated these words to be synonymous. Satish
Date sent: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 10:00:40 -0700 A few questions come to my mind: 1. Why does a schedule caste staying in a Bombay flat worth Rs 20 lakh need this benefit? 2. Even after education, why does a person need reservation to carry him all his life? Is s/he incapable to get promotions on their own and have to depend on reservations? 3. Why can't we have reservations for the economically backward or people from the backward area rather than caste? 4. Why is it necessary to give these benefits free to the people? The community should get something in return from the people availing these benefits -- like working for three years for their own community etc. SK
Date sent: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 16:28:39 PDT I like some of the things the BJP want to implement like the Uniform Civil Code, equal rights in Kashmir to everyone (if that is done then I think I will be full citizen of INDIA rather than a partial citizen). According to me no one in India is a full citizens except the Kashmiris. It looks like like none of the politicians understand what Ambedkar wanted. In my right mind, I think he wanted everyone to be literate. If a person avails reservation are his children eligible for reservation? If this continues, illiterates will remain illiterate forever. I think our country a different kind of reservation system (an economic one). Reservation in education should be totally removed. If any politician is honest and is not looking for votes, he should try explaining this to the people rather than making their lives worse. Sree
Date sent: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 22:21:56 -0400 People have become so insensitive in this country that without an iota of shame, they can even say that reservations should continue beyond 20000; why 2000? In other words, the country is doomed to get ruined because of the blunders commited by the irresponsible, so called founding fathers of the nation. It was sheer idiocy to think that the plight of a sect of the people, who were victims of the society, can improve by pampering them at the cost of merit. Extending the same logic, the world should show special consideration to India, which was a victim of foreign rule for centuries. Is anyone showing such special consideration? All this is crap. If India is truly secular and truly a caste-less society, let everyone have equal opportunity in everything. With special rules for Muslims and minorities, with special rules for the so-called backward classes and scheduled castes, all of us have seen what happened to the country in the last 50 years. At least now, at least now, why don't we wake up and start rebuilding our country in a whole new perspective. Nagraj
Date sent: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 23:46:03 EDT Let Mr Vajpayee continue the sordid saga of mediocrity, espoused by his predecessors to garner political points. He is, after all, just an average run- -of-the-mill political leader that has come to sanctify our times in India. So let mediocrity flourish and let's appease the vote "dea-vata" as otherwise it's no "kursi." And then another political actor played his looney toons....
Date sent: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 17:04:28 -0500 Is this a film review or just a wierd essay in English literature? Beats me! I wish people would write in neat and simple prose. Try reading some Hemmingway novels. Anil
Date sent: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 14:29:42 -0400 It is true that LA Confidential is closer to Hollywood orthodox in terms of its characters and story line. But if you think of it, the movie does not appear far from reality. More importantly, the movie is not made in true-Hollywood style. If that were the case, it would have been a big hit -- instead it has been made in such a complex convoluted twisted manner, with a dark Noirish style that it was unpalatable for most of the Americans. Therefore, I think the movie was eventually a Hollywood non-conformist (unorthodox?!) movie. Mitul
