Another Al Umma activist arrested in Madras

The Madras police have arrested another activist of the banned Islamic fundamentalist group Al Umma.

Joint Commissioner (north Madras) Radhakrishnan told the media today that Niyamatullah (35) was arrested at his residence in Triplicane on the basis of a confessional statement made by three Al Umma activists arrested earlier in connection with the seizure of huge quantities of explosives from a well in Pulianthope in north Madras recently.

Niyamatullah was later produced before a magistrate who remanded him to 15 days's judicial custody, he said.

The so-called human bomb Ayesha and three other Al Umma activists continued to elude the police dragnet, he added.

More than 20 activists of the Al Umma have been arrested so far in connection with the seizure of explosives in various parts of the state, following the February 14 serial bomb blasts.
