'Human bomb' targeting Advani arrested in Coimbatore

An alleged 'human bomb', who was loitering near the venue of a campaign meeting which was to have been addressed by Home Minister L K Advani on February 14 last in Coimbatore, has been arrested by the crime branch's criminal investigation department.

The police identified the arrested as Amjad Ali (19) of Melapalayam village in Tirunelveli district.

According to the police, Amjad Ali could not activate the bombs he was carrying with him on that fateful day as the meeting was cancelled abruptly following the serial bomb blasts, which claimed more than 60 lives.

He reached Al Ameen colony with the bombs after the meeting was cancelled and handed them over to one Jehangir who had hidden them in a bush near a playground in Bilal Nagar in Coimbatore.

Four teenaged boys, who meddled with the bombs in the bush, were killed on the spot on February 17.

Amjad Ali was today produced before Judicial Magistrate Tamil Selvi, who remanded him to seven days police custody.
