Bhama: I don't want to lose my 'good girl' image

Malayalam actor Bhama, famous for her pretty girl-next-door image, has been choosing roles that cater to that perception.

She will soon be seen as the wife of legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan in a bilingual (Tamil and English) film directed by Gnana Rajasekharan.

The actress was also recently in the news with her statement that she won’t be doing any more item numbers after her controversial dance sequence in the Kannada film Auto Raja.

Bhama tells Vijay G about the controversy, and her upcoming projects.

Your statement that there will be no more item numbers after the Kannada film Auto Raja has been widely discussed. Why did you say so?

I had done this song for Auto Raja and the controversy was created by the social media quite unnecessarily.

It was not a conventional film and I did the sequence just for the film, considering the strength of the theme. It was a powerful role.

It is about a village girl who wanted to become a film star. It is about her struggle.
In 75 per cent of the film, I wear traditional attire. After my character becomes an actress, I had to wear some modern outfits.

So that song was important.
Let me make it clear: I have a good image and I don’t want to lose it.

Are you also focusing on films othere than Malyalam?

I am doing quite a few films outside Kerala.

Currently I am shooting for the Malayalam film 1000 C. I am one of the five female leads in the thriller. Then there is Kadha Veedu and D Company.

You are playing the wife of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan in Gnana Rajasekharan’s film...

I am so thrilled to play the role. I never imagined I'd be a part of such a huge film. The film is being made in Tamil and English.

I have enjoyed learning about the character. We have completed the schedules at Kumbhakonam and Chennai.
