'I didn't know how to look like a rich guy'

What did you like about your character, Sanjay Ramaswamy?

The look of Sanjay Ramaswamy was very challenging because I don't look that stylish and sauve. I didn't know how to look like a rich guy! (laughs) It took me time to come out with the Sanjay Ramaswamy look.

My inspiration was the Aamir Khan look in Dil Chahta Hai. But I realised the wardrobe did not help me -- only the sunglasses did!

Girls preferred the suave Sanjay Ramaswamy to the guy, who wanted to take revenge...

Yes, girls liked the suave guy better! It is also because of the scenes where I just kept quiet.

While shooting, did you expect the film to have such a big impact?

We knew it would be a very good film. We wanted it to be the best and most talked about film of the year. That was the spirit with which we made it. We -- the director, cameraman and me -- kept saying that all the time. That motivated us to give our best.

We had the same feeling when we made Kaakha Kaakha as well. Murugadoss used to ask moviegoers why they liked Kaakha Kaakha so much. He wanted to make a better film than Kaakha Kaakha and Ramana. That was the benchmark.
