'Dev D is a contemporary version of Devdas'

Dev, who is the son of rich parents, has just returned from London. Sadly, he cannot re-unite with his childhood sweetheart Paro because of status and caste differences.

Unlike Chatterjee's novel, this movie is set in Punjab, which is a rich state, says Deol. Dev, in fact, is Devender and not Devdas, while Paro is Parminder (played by Mahi Gill) and not Parvati.

"This is a contemporary version of Devdas. The movie has been done so many times before. We wanted to do something different," Deol said. Besides, changing the setting and tweaking the characters a little would bring originality to the movie, he added.
