When Burt made a killing debut

Actor Burt Lancaster was born in East Harlem, New York, on November 2, 1913.

After performing as -- of all things -- an acrobat with travelling circuses, he joined the army and finally moved to Broadway.

A move to Hollywood got him his first film, The Killers, in 1946. It was a massive hit, and made Lancaster a star almost overnight. His career spawned hits like Birdman of Alcatraz and Here to Eternity. Lancaster died at age 80, in 1994.

Also on November 2, in 1920, a radio station in Pittsburgh broadcast results of the 1920 presidential race between James Cox and Warren Harding.

It was the first public radio news broadcast of any significance. By the next year, Americans had spent $10 million on radios. Just two years later, there were more than 500 radio stations on the air.
