When Simon met Garfunkel

On October 13, 1941, Paul Simon was born in Newark, New Jersey. By the time he reached grade six in school, he had met Art Garfunkel.

Both would eventually become one of pop music's most successful duos, hitting the big time soon after their teenage years, then going on to win a couple of Grammies while they were at it.

By the time Simon and Garfunkel had finished working together in 1972, they had left behind an impressive body of work, one that continues to win them new generations of fans.

Their first album [Wednesday Morning 3 am] alone yielded one of their biggest hits, Sounds of Silence, in 1964.

Five more albums followed, along with the inevitable Greatest Hits collection. For those who haven't seen or heard them together yet, now may be a good time to rent their Concert in Central Park on DVD.

As for Paul Simon, he continues to do what he does best. His solo career has been as, if not more, successful as his time with Garfunkel. His 1986 album Graceland got him a Grammy for Album of the Year.

He followed that up with other successes, most of which were critically acclaimed. A record out last year sold well too. Clearly, this is a musician who isn't done with his craft just yet.
