At Hogwarts, Harry makes his first friends: Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom. He is sorted into the Gryffindor house -- there are four, the others being Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin by a magical hat.
Harry's scar hurts mysteriously when he looks at the professors' table. He is also ill at ease with his fame. Every wizard knows his name, which isn't always a good thing. The Potions teacher Professor Severus Snape positively hates Harry. But others -- including Hagrid, the giant of a man who rescued Harry from his Muggle life, the strict but caring Transfiguration Professor Minerva McGonagall, and the mysterious Dumbledore -- seem to have a soft spot for him.
Harry also finds out he is a natural at flying on the broomstick, and becomes the youngest player in years in his house's team for Quidditch, the only sport that matters for wizards.
