The rare, first movies of Bollywood's best

Suman, Madan Bavaria

Director Madan Bavaria's 16-minute black and white film, Suman talks about the phase from adolescent to adulthood.

Featuring a young Jaya Bhaduri, the film traces the transition from innocence of childhood to the bashfulness of youth.

Jaya easily passed off as a 15-year-old, and is seen indulging in childlike behaviour -- playing with children, stealing money from the temple to buy ice candy and plucking fruits from someone else's farm.

It is said that Hrishikesh Mukherjee saw the film and decided to cast Jaya in Guddi.

Directed in 1970, the film also stars Danny Denzongpa as an ice candy man.
