Raaja Paarvai (1981)

Kamal's first venture as producer saw him play a blind musician. The sultry Madhavi, with who he made a successful combo, played his object of affection. Costumes courtesy then wife Vaani Ganapathy, I think. Terrific cinematography, music that resonates to this day, by the inimitable Ilayaraja, plus Kamal's outstanding performance made this a must-see, but apparently the paying public didn't share the actor's passion for the film. Talk then had it that Kamal swore off making such movies, and turned to regular fare. Personally, I rate this as Kamal's finest movie.

Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1991) (left)

If you thought one Kamal was too much, this one had four! A laugh riot to end all laugh riots, this was a comedy of errors involving separated-at-birth quadruplets, all played by one man. So you have him in the roles of a suave millionaire, a cook, a crook, and a fireman, but it was as the cook Kameshwaran, from Palakkad, that Kamal is most memorable. Dialogues were by Crazy Mohan, so that should say it all.
