Irrespective of the fate of his films, Yash Johar continued to make his films on a lavish scale. In Gumrah, the desi remake of Bangkok Hilton, Johar roped in Sridevi and Sanjay Dutt and director Mahesh Bhatt.

He repeated Bhatt for the Shah Rukh Khan-Juhi Chawla-Sonali Bendre starrer Duplicate. Duplicate, which had SRK in a double role and was extensively shot in Prague, the Czech Republic, bombed.

In an earlier interview to rediff.com, his son Karan Johar said, "My father did what he always does. He gave him [Mahesh Bhatt] freedom and all the resources in the world. But he is not a responsible director. He was careless and took virtually no interest in making the film. If it was not for Shah Rukh and the way he took charge of the film, it would never have been completed. These are some of the sorrows of the film industry. Duplicate should have never been made."
