Amee Shah (gazing at a photograph of her Suraiya Aunty): When other stars were being paid Rs 25,000 a movie, she told me she was paid a lakh. And when the other stars graduated to Rs 40,000 she got Rs 2 lakhs. She acted in about 75 movies. She lived comfortably. She made provisions to look after herself throughout her life.

She used to watch Star Plus, all the soaps. Her favourites were Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasauti. Among the English serials she loved The Bold And The Beautiful and used to grumble that they didn't show it on weekends.

She rarely went out. When she did, she would always wear a burkha.

Camy Sanghvi: Even when she came home she used to dress up. She loved to dress up. After every meal she used to rinse her mouth and re-apply lipstick. At 75, she had all her teeth and they sparkled like pearls. Her hair was black and only in hospital did I notice a few grey hair. In hospital she told me, "bring me three things from home. My dark red lipstick, my nail polish and my slippers."

When she picked up the phone she never started the conversation. You had to speak first. She would reply only if she recognised your voice. Even her 'Hello' was melodious.

Amee Shah: You could ring the doorbell forever, but she would not open the door. You could not drop in to meet her just like that. You had to call and come.
