Amitabh Bachchan

'I will never take to politics again'

Superstar Amitabh Bachhan became an MP in 1984 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Allahabad on a Congress ticket. A close friend of the late Rajiv Gandhi, his popularity as a film actor saw him win that election by a landslide. But after the Rs 640 million Bofors scandal, he gave up his seat in Parliament and vowed never to enter the 'cesspool' of politics again.

In 2002, in his first politically tinged public appearance in 15 years, Bachchan supported the Samajwadi Party and its chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, during their assembly election campaign in Uttar Pradesh. But he still ruled out his re-entry into politics, saying he felt he was not fit for the job.
