Shabana Azmi

'Not belonging to any political party actually helps me because I value my independent voice, I treasure it'

Actress Shabana Azmi, all grace on camera, is all grit as a firebrand MP.

'When I was young, I was sick of politics. I was proud of not reading the newspaper. But my father [Kaifi Azmi] was confident that I would turn to activism. As an actor one draws resources from life, you look around and ask 'why'. Besides, I did a lot of films that dealt with social issues,' she had once told rediff.com

Azmi served on the Population Commission [2000] with fellow actor-turned-politician Vinod Khanna and was part of a four-member team -- the others being Amar Singh, Sitaram Yechuri and Raj Babbar -- that visited Gujarat in March 2002 after the riots.
