Indian staff threaten strike on wages

Employees of the state-run airline Indian have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from May 8 demanding promotions and a revision of wages.

A statement by Air Corporations Employees' Union  said the employees would hold demonstrations  in their offices till April 28 followed by demonstrations across the country between May 1 and 5.

The Indian management, however, said it did not expect any impact on operations and would try resolve the issues soon.

"The protests are taking place outside offices before and after office hours. We have been talking to them. We do not expect it to disrupt services and will resolve it at the earliest," said a senior executive of the airline.

Employees are demanding for immediate revision of wages, which has been pending for the last 10 years. According to a statement released by ACEU wage revision takes place every five years.

"Carrier progression has not taken place for the last two decades. Employees are languishing in their grades and posts for past 39 years," the statement said.

The employees unions also alleged that Rs 19.52 crore (Rs 195.2 million) have been siphoned off from the employees' pension fund and have demanded an inquiry into this.

ACEU said it represented 99 per cent of the workforce working in frontline areas, including commercial, traffic, ticketing, reservations, airport and cabin crew. In addition, it also claimed to have the support of 90 per cent of the workforce in operations areas, including ground support and engineering.
